Who are we?

NICE provides free chess lessons and venues for the community. We currently serve Lamberts Point via the new community center near ODU on 42nd & Bowden's Ferry Rd. as well as the Mary D. Pretlow Library in Ocean View. We are currently hoping to create a number of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) workshops in parthership with Dr. Arthur Bowman at NSU and the Villa Heights Civic Association. We are 501c3 under the LiveSafe Foundation here in Norfolk, Virginia.

Train of Thought Chess & STEM Center Community Service PROJECT

Our goal is to take elements our community alread has, combine and update them into a location that can serve the community. In this case its the classics of chess and trains to build critical thinking and STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) skills for youth in our community. It will also allow members of the community, young and old, to volunteer as mentors, instructors and caretakers. We can add computer access to bridge a gaping digital devide. We can learn and play chess together just for the sake of improving our thinking skills and building community.

You do not have to be a great chess player to be a great life stratgist.

We can make this happen and we can make it last, but many hands makes light work so please join us by adding whatever you can to the mix: materials, labor, ideas, contacts, community connections and support and financial donations.

Our community needs people to get aboard to rehab the old trolley-train station (circa 1920) located in Villa Heights on 21st St. just off of Church St. near the Farm Market.

As a community we have an opportunity to help the Villa Heights Civic League make a lasting neighborhood transformation for children in their neighborhood and the community of Lindenwood as well. It will also support our public schools in their effort to bridge the digital divide by providing STEM and critical thinking education to a severely isolated and underserved area of at-risk youth.

We have the chance to convert the old trolley-train station into a Train of Thought center for kids with senior citizens and community volunteers as mentors and teachers. We want to draw on our tech community for help to make the building work with solar energy and offer tech workshops for free along with chess for critical thinking and a model railway that will be used to teach STEM by using train schedules and engineering tasks.

Norfolk Initiative for Chess Excellence is partnering with the Villa Heights Civic League & Dr. Arthur Bowman of Norfolk State University and his group Science Everywhere LLC and local churches to make this project happen for the families in the area.

Where is Villa Heights? Take a look on Google Maps https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en. It is located behind the farm market near Church Street. It is “isolated” because of the traffic patterns which make it unsafe for children to try and make the trip to the nearest resources which are located in Park Place and even those are minimal at best.

1,798 married couples with children.
5,434 single-parent households (910 men, 4,524 women).

Please help us just get the word out by passing on the video we made to draw support for this joint project. Help us convert this old building into the chess & STEM Train of Thought Center for the neighborhood where we can teach and play chess, create a model railroad to be used to teach STEM disciplines, hold workshops on STEM and life strategies as well. We can make this into a place where the community can begin to partner with Norfolk Public Schools to bridge the Digital Divide with computer access and innovation.

The building owner will donate the property to our new NICE 501c3

  • Owner will supply school furnishings & new windows
  • We must put in: new ceiling, new lighting, drywall, glass block “windows,” repaint, create model railroad on a large existing wooden interior platform that is already in place and add computers.

To make this work we are looking for technology, design & building partners to help us:

  • Make this a solar building so we can keep those new lights on
  • Brainstorm, partner, on workshop concepts
  • Optimize this unique, historic space

We are also working to fundraise and then apply for matching grants via HUD, city development block and other grants. We are always open to suggestions on funding and of course, donations can be mailed to: NICE 1651 Longwood Dr., Norfolk, Va. 23508.

What we need right now is to generate buzz. Help us out by posting, Tweeting and blogging this note and video.

Thanks. More to come soon.
