A prominent aspect of workplace wellness programs, and thus a key area for offering up HealthETeams Challenge challenges, is physical wellbeing. The challenges that meet this component of wellness/wellbeing are related to two areas: nutrition/healthy eating and physical activities/healthy exercise. So posts related to this topic are for Physical Wellbeing.

To be sure, most traditional workplace wellness programs place great emphasis on physical health because workplace wellness programs have been based mostly on reducing long term healthcare risks. However, most progressive employers are beginning to understand that while physical wellbeing can aid in reducing preventable healthcare costs in the future, in the short term physical wellbeing is a driver of better and more energetic performance and employee engagement. In keeping with the context of HealthETeams Challenge, all challenges should be crafted to emphasize a dimension related to teamwork and collaboration.

CHALLENGE: Post a picture of a healthy meal that you ate this week in the Photo section and right a short Blog about it. OR...post a blog about an interesting insight that could improve the impact around physical well being.

I will take the lead on this one. Check out my Blog and my Calendar entry for April 30th, both promoting Step Up for The Up Center-the successful fundraising, fun-raising, awareness-building, teamwork-promoting and healthy lifestyle activity. I read about it in The Virginia-Beach Beacon and it seems like just the kind of thing our HealthETeams Challenge team(s) should participate in!

The exercise below may not be a healthy meal recipe, but it is a very healthy exercise recipe that I get from SparkPeople:

Single Arm Lateral Raises with Band

Starting Position Hold the left handle in your left hand. Place other side of resistance band on the floor and stand on it with feet hip-width apart. Stand tall with back straight, abs engaged, left arm at your side, palm facing inward, and right hand on your hip.

Action EXHALE: Keeping left arm straight, slowly lift your arm up to shoulder height.

INHALE: Slowly return back down to the start position to complete one rep.

Finish set on this side and then switch sides.

Special Instructions Do not lean back or to the sides as you lift your arm. Keep arm straight, but not locked. Keep wrist in line with the forearm--not bent up or down. Make it easier: Stand closer to the handle on the floor to decrease resistance. Make it harder: Stand closer to the handle you’re holding to increase resistance. Stand with legs closer together for more core challenge.

Like most people, one of my New Year's resolutions is to lose weight by eating more nutritious healthy meals and to get on a sustained exercise regimen-riding a stationary bike at least two to three times per week.

Check out my favorite healthy sandwich! Instead of a tuna salad sandwich, which is not too unhealthy, why not try a salmon sandwich. Look in photos and in my blog that I just now wrote for ways to easily substitute healthy choices for our favorite, not always healthy, meals?!
