Big Week in Virginia Politics: Expanding Medicaid

After a series of compelling editorials and op-ed pieces written by noteworthy politicians and the editorial staff of The Virginian-Pilot, two strong pieces this past weekend promote an opinion that expanding Medicaid...

....works for Virginia.

In fact, Virginia State Senator Lousie Lucas, a former member of Portsmouth's City Council that has represented the 18th Senatorial District for more than 36 years wrote a compelling op-ed piece favoring Medicaid expansion.  The op-ed piece ran on Saturday's (may 12, 2018) "other views" section and it loudly trumpeted her support for Medicaid expansion.  The piece had the title "Expanded Medicaid Works for Virginia", which left little doubt of her stance on the issue.  The following day, The Virginian-Pilot's editorial persuasively made the same statement-promoting that this week's vote by the Virginia General Assembly pass the modified bill in support for Medicaid expansion on grounds that it's the right thing to do, builds economic leverage for the state by returning federal tax dollars to be re-applied in Virginia and has elements promoting improved healthy living habits along with work requirements.

As we have said in this blog space on numerous occasions recently, this legislation must carry with it an element of consequence/compliance that recipients of these publicly-funded health insurance benefits are taking strong actions to reduce their health care claims costs.  Without these elements in place, this is simply a political gesture which misses the mark for driving population health management chances whose time has arrived!

Until we find ways to reduce health care spending, improve overall health, strengthen knowledge and interest in the general public for living healthier lives and being better health care consumers-and improve patient outcomes, we will only be kicking the can down the road...again and again and again.
