Population Health Management-Substance Abuse and Recovery

I wanted to share a few thoughts about ways to think about one arena in regional population health management-substance use disorder (SUD), and a framework.....

....for assessing the marketing and determining where to take action in helping drive "SUD recovery at scale.

Here’s a layman’s perspective on one way to attack the market by focusing on the of the “continuum of the opioid epidemic” that we can serve better than most of the soon to emerge competition.  (BTW, while this is a national epidemic, it’s solutions for the broad mass market are likely local and regional in nature).

Again, this is a layman’s view (mine) which is much less informed than the rest of RT’s leadership team. And to demonstrate my naivete I also think the broader definition of substance abuse which includes alcoholism is part and parcel to the “crisis”-it’s more than just opioid drugs:

5 Stages of Opioid Epidemic and Tactical Response to Each:

Stage 1:  Non-participation-vulnerable (prevention)

Stage 2:  Gateway usage (usage reversal)

Stage 3:  Addiction (comprehensive intervention)

Stage 4:  Life-threatening (emergency response)

Stage 5:  Recovery-sustaining (relapse avoidance)

IMHO, I think that with the concept of applying the concept(s) of collective impact and cross-sector collaboration, we can play in all the stages EXCEPT stage 4 which we should avoid even entering.  And also IMHO, I think that most of the competition and the discussion will revolve around Stage 4 because that is where the deaths and life-ruining issues reside.  (But I believe the larger market and the one we can win with “good enough”-disruptive innovation solutions of various types that are simple to understand, affordable, convenient, on-demand solutions that actually work is in Stages 1,2,3 and 5.
